Lift a Jeep the right way
A Wrangler is nothing like an IFS truck. It runs solid axles front and rear, so a lift is really about geometry — control-arm angles, track-bar position, and pinion angle all move when you add height, and if they're not corrected you get the Jeep world's most famous problem: death wobble. Getting the caster back, re-centering the axle with an adjustable track bar, and keeping the driveline angles right is the difference between a Jeep that drives straight at 70 and one that scares you.
We build every Wrangler and Gladiator — TJ/LJ, JK/JKU, JL/JLU, and JT — from a 2.5-inch Rough Country or TeraFlex kit to a full EVO or Clayton long-arm on 37s. Taller builds get the extras that make them work: adjustable control arms, a proper track bar, a slip-yoke eliminator and CV driveshaft, extended brake lines and bump stops, and a re-gear so the 3.6 isn't miserable on big tires — up to custom driveshafts and 1-ton axle swaps for the rigs going all the way. Short-arm vs long-arm — what actually changes
The single biggest decision on a Wrangler lift is short-arm vs long-arm, and it comes down to how high you're going and how you drive. A short-arm kit keeps the factory control-arm mounting points and uses adjustable arms plus a drop bracket to re-correct caster and pinion angle after the lift. It's simpler, cheaper, fully bolt-on, and for a daily-driven trail Jeep at 2 to 3.5 inches it's the right answer — good on-road manners, plenty of room for 35s, nothing to fabricate. Its ceiling is geometry: past about 3.5 inches the stock-length arms sit at a steep angle, which stiffens the ride and starts to bind the suspension at full flex.
A long-arm system (we install EVO, Clayton, and similar) throws away the factory mounts and relocates them rearward, running much longer control arms at a flatter angle. That flatter angle is the whole point — it keeps the axle tracking straight through big travel, so you get noticeably more articulation, a smoother ride at height, and far less bump-steer on a 4-inch-plus build than any short-arm can deliver. The trade-off is that it's a bigger job — a new crossmember and brackets, sometimes a belly-up skid, and more money — so it earns its keep on taller and rocks-first rigs, not a mild daily lift. If you're not sure which side of that line your build is on, that's exactly the conversation we have before we spec anything.
Either way, once a Jeep is past about 2.5 inches it usually wants a slip-yoke eliminator and a CV driveshaft so the rear driveline runs smooth, and every lifted Jeep we touch gets a death-wobble inspection before it leaves. Solid axles clear big tires far more easily than an IFS truck — 35s fit most Rubicons at 2.5 inches, 37s want 3.5-plus and some fender trimming (see the table). For the serious 40s builds we also build custom driveshafts and do 1-ton axle swaps (Dana 60 and similar) with the steering and driveline to match.

Solid axles clear big tires more easily than an IFS truck. Anything past 35s usually wants a long-arm and some fender trimming — we spec the lift, tires, and driveline together.
Death wobble: what causes it, and how we eliminate it
Death wobble is the violent front-end shimmy a lifted solid-axle Jeep can develop after hitting a bump at speed. It isn't random and it isn't a mystery — it's slop somewhere in the front end that a lift makes worse. We diagnose it component by component and fix the cause, not mask it with a bigger steering stabilizer. Here are the options we work through to eliminate it:
- Track bar — worn bushings, a loose bolt, or a stock bar that no longer centers the axle. This is the number-one cause; we fit an adjustable heavy-duty bar and re-center the axle.
- Ball joints — worn joints let the knuckle move around; we replace them.
- Steering — tie-rod ends, drag link, and the steering box. We upgrade to heavy-duty steering (Apex Chassis, Steer Smarts) and add a box or sector-shaft brace where it helps.
- Control arms & bushings — worn bushings and wrong caster; adjustable arms set the geometry back to spec.
- Wheel bearings & caster — checked and corrected as part of the fix.
A steering stabilizer can quiet a wobble, but on its own it's a band-aid — if the track bar or ball joints are worn, it comes back. We find the real cause so it's gone for good.
