Chevy Colorado ZR2 Overland Build: Rooftop Tent, Rack + Leveling

We turned a Chevy Colorado ZR2 into a self-contained overland rig — a bed rack carrying a rooftop tent and fuel cans, a front tube bumper, and a Peak leveling suspension underneath. The ZR2 is the best off-road Colorado from the factory, and this build gives it a place to sleep and the gear to stay out.

This Colorado ZR2 came through Juggernaut USA in Wheat Ridge (Denver), CO to become a weekend adventure truck. The ZR2 already brings the hard parts — front and rear lockers, wider track, real off-road shocks — so our job was to make it live-in-able: a bed rack and rooftop tent to camp anywhere, storage for fuel and water, a front tube bumper for protection, and a Peak leveling setup to carry it all with a squared stance.

A bed rack and rooftop tent

The heart of an overland build is where you sleep. We mounted a bed rack that carries a rooftop tent up top and frees the bed below for gear, plus mounts for fuel and water cans on the side. It turns the ZR2 from a day-trip truck into one you can disappear into the backcountry with for a weekend — set up camp anywhere you can park.

Protection and stance

Up front, a tube bumper adds protection and presence without the weight of a full plate bumper. Underneath, the truck rides on a Peak leveling setup that squares the stance and carries the added weight of the rack, tent, and gear. On top of the ZR2's factory lockers and off-road suspension, it is a genuinely capable, self-sufficient rig — not just a good-looking one.

Common questions on this build

Is the Colorado ZR2 a good overland platform?

One of the best mid-size options from the factory — lockers front and rear, a wider track, and real off-road shocks. Add a place to sleep and storage and it is a complete adventure truck.

Can you put a rooftop tent on a mid-size truck?

Yes — a bed rack carries the tent up top and keeps the bed usable underneath. We spec and mount the rack to carry the load safely.

Can you build my Colorado or Canyon for overlanding?

Yes — racks, tents, storage, bumpers, suspension, and lighting, all built and installed in-house.
