Nissan NV Skid Plates: The 2011–2021 NV1500 / NV2500 / NV3500 Guide.

The Nissan NV is one of the least-supported vans in the aftermarket — which is a problem when the catalytic converter sits exposed on a van tall enough to get under without a jack. What's at risk underneath, what the factory gives you (almost nothing), and the 1/4″ aluminum armor we build for the 2011–2021 NV1500, NV2500 and NV3500.

The short version

Nissan shipped the NV without skid plates on any trim, and the converter sits exposed under a van tall enough that a thief does not need to jack it up.

One fitment covers the NV1500, NV2500 and NV3500 across the entire 2011–2021 run: 1/4″ 5052-H32 aluminum, bolt-on, powder-coated, lifetime warranty, cut in Colorado.

If the van parks outside overnight, the cat shield is the piece to buy first.

Factory skid plates on any trim

If you own a Nissan NV, you have already discovered the problem: almost nobody makes parts for it. Nissan built the NV from 2011 to 2021, sold it mostly to fleets and tradesmen, and then discontinued it — so the aftermarket that grew up around the Sprinter and ProMaster never really arrived here. That is inconvenient for accessories and genuinely expensive when something under the van gets cut off or caved in. This guide covers what is exposed under an NV, what the factory does and does not protect, what your actual options are, and the 1/4″ aluminum armor we build for it. We manufacture these plates in Wheat Ridge, Colorado and install them.

What's exposed under a Nissan NV

The NV is a body-on-frame van built on Titan bones, which means it sits high and it carries real weight — both good things until you look at what is hanging underneath with nothing over it:

  • Engine oil pan — the lowest, most forward casting. Crack it and you lose oil immediately; run the engine dry and you are buying an engine, not a pan.
  • Transmission pan and crossmember — exposed across the mid-belly.
  • Catalytic converter — the big one on this platform, and the reason most NV owners find this page. More below.
  • Fuel tank and lines — low toward the rear with minimal factory shielding.

Factory underbody protection on the NV amounts to thin splash shielding — enough to keep road spray off, not enough to stop anything solid. There is no factory skid plate package on this van in any trim, which is a different situation from a truck where at least the off-road trims ship with something.

The catalytic converter problem

This is why most people are reading this. High-clearance vans are the easiest vehicles in a parking lot to get under — no jack required, a thief can slide beneath an NV and be out in a couple of minutes with a cordless saw. That is the same reason the Sprinter and ProMaster appear on national most-targeted lists year after year.

The bill is what makes it hurt. Replacement runs $1,000–$3,500 per the National Insurance Crime Bureau, and on a discontinued platform the parts availability problem makes it worse — you are not just paying, you are waiting. For a work van, downtime is the real cost.

The honest framing: national converter theft peaked in 2022 and has fallen hard since, as scrap metal prices collapsed and states passed tougher laws. But precious-metal prices turned back up in 2025, and a bolted-on aluminum plate is a one-time fix that does not care what rhodium trades at. Our converter protection guide covers why a plate beats etching, cages and alarms, and the theft statistics report has the full 2019–2026 data.

What's actually available for an NV — honestly

The NV aftermarket is thin but not empty, and it is worth knowing what is out there before you assume one option is the only option. Two categories get called “skid plates” for this van and they are not the same thing:

  • Bull bar kits with a skid plate element — Stehlen and Black Horse Off Road both sell front bull bars for the 2012–2021 NV with a decorative or light-duty skid plate panel attached. These are front-end styling and light brush protection. They do not armor the oil pan, transmission or converter, and they should not be compared on the same terms as underbody plates.
  • Actual underbody armor — a much shorter list, with one caveat that matters. Avatar Offroad builds a heavy-duty steel skid plate for the NV3500, and it is a well-made piece — but it mounts to their front bumper. It is part of a front-end system, not a plate you can bolt to an otherwise stock van. If you were buying their bumper anyway, that is a legitimate way to get steel underneath. If all you want is armor, it means committing to a much larger purchase than the plate itself.

So the field is narrower than it first looks. If you want underbody protection without also replacing your front bumper, the practical choice comes down to material — and the trade is the same one we lay out in our aluminum vs. steel breakdown: 1/4″ 5052-H32 aluminum resists permanent bending better than the 3/16″ steel most kits use, at roughly half the weight, and it will not rust against the underbody in road salt. Steel's real advantage is surface hardness when you drag it repeatedly across rock — which matters more on a rock-crawling rig than on a work van. On a heavy, often-loaded van we think the weight and corrosion argument wins, but that is a judgment, not a fact, and you should make it yourself.

Our Nissan NV lineup

Every plate is CNC plasma-cut from 1/4″ 5052-H32 aluminum, press-brake formed, powder-coated black as standard, and bolts to factory mounting points with no drilling — no bumper, brackets or other parts required. Made in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, backed by a lifetime warranty, and fitted to the 2011–2021 NV1500, NV2500 and NV3500.

Three pieces: an engine skid plate over the oil pan and front end, a transmission skid plate and cat shield that covers the transmission pan and the converter in one piece, and a full package that combines them. Most owners who come to us for theft protection want the transmission and cat plate; owners who actually take the van off pavement want the package.

Everything is in the Nissan NV collection, and the install instructions are published so you can read the whole job before you buy.

NV1500 vs NV2500 vs NV3500 — do the same plates fit?

Yes. All three share the same chassis and underbody packaging; the difference between them is payload rating, engine option, and roof height, not the parts of the van a skid plate bolts to. One fitment covers the whole range across the entire 2011–2021 production run.

The NV200 is a different vehicle entirely — a small front-wheel-drive compact van built on a separate platform — and these plates do not fit it.

Install

Every plate is bolt-on, no-drill — it uses existing factory mounting points and ships with hardware and instructions. Budget roughly an hour of labor per plate section; most owners do it in a driveway with a jack, stands and hand tools. Oil-drain and service cutouts mean routine maintenance does not require dropping armor.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Nissan NV come with factory skid plates?
No. Factory underbody protection is thin splash shielding, not structural armor, and there is no off-road trim that adds a real skid plate package. On this van, everything under it is aftermarket territory.

Do the same plates fit the NV1500, NV2500 and NV3500?
Yes — all three share the chassis and underbody, so one fitment covers the range for 2011–2021. The NV200 is a different platform and is not covered.

Does anyone else make skid plates for the NV?
A few, with caveats worth knowing before you shop. Avatar Offroad builds a heavy-duty steel skid plate for the NV3500, but it mounts to their front bumper — so it is part of a front-end system rather than a standalone plate. Worth it if you wanted that bumper anyway; a much bigger commitment if you did not. Stehlen and Black Horse Off Road sell front bull bars with a skid plate panel attached, but those are front-end brush protection, not underbody armor, so do not compare them on coverage. That is most of the field, because Nissan discontinued the NV in 2021 and it was always a fleet van — the aftermarket never developed the way it did for the Sprinter or ProMaster.

Do I have to change my bumper to fit your plates?
No. Ours bolt to factory mounting points with no drilling and no other parts — the van can be completely stock. That is the main practical difference between our plates and the steel option on this platform.

Will a plate stop catalytic converter theft?
It is the strongest deterrent available. A solid plate bolted across the converter blocks the cut, so a thief cannot get a saw to it quickly and most move to an easier target. Etching only helps identify parts after the fact, and alarms get ignored.

Can I still get parts for a discontinued van?
For our plates, yes — we manufacture them ourselves in Colorado, so availability does not depend on anyone else's supply chain, and the lifetime warranty means the shop that made your plate can remake it.

Aluminum or steel?
Both work as a barrier. We build in 1/4″ 5052-H32 aluminum because it resists permanent bending better than the 3/16″ steel most kits use, weighs roughly half as much — which matters on a vehicle that is already heavy and often loaded — and will not rust against the underbody in road salt. Steel gouges less when dragged repeatedly across rock. The full engineering is in our aluminum vs. steel comparison.
