Lexus GX470: Bilstein 6112 / 5160 Suspension Upgrade

A Lexus GX470 overland rig with worn-out shocks got Bilstein 6112 adjustable front coilovers and 5160 rear reservoir shocks — restoring the ride, adding up to about 2.5 inches of front adjustability, and controlling the weight of its steel winch bumper and overland setup on and off road.

This Lexus GX470 came into Juggernaut USA in Wheat Ridge (Denver), CO with worn-out shocks and struts that were hurting the ride and comfort — made worse by everything the truck carries. It is a built overland rig, running a steel winch bumper, a rooftop tent, and the rest of an adventure setup, and all that added weight is hard on tired factory dampers. We handled the suspension: Bilstein 6112 adjustable coilovers up front and Bilstein 5160 reservoir shocks in the rear. (The bumper and overland gear were already on the truck — the suspension is what we did.)

The problem: worn shocks under a loaded overland rig

Factory shocks wear out, and they wear out faster under weight. This GX carries a steel front bumper, a rooftop tent up high, and a full overland load — so by the time the original dampers were tired, the truck rode floaty and uncontrolled, with the nose sitting low under the bumper. The fix is not just new shocks; it is the right shocks to carry that weight and control it.

Front: Bilstein 6112 adjustable coilovers

Up front we ran the Bilstein 6112 — a monotube coilover with an adjustable spring collar. The collar settings let you dial the front ride height across the kit's range, up to about 2.5 inches of lift, so you can level the nose back up under the weight of the steel bumper and set the stance where you want it. It rides far better than a worn factory strut, and it gives the front end the travel and control an overland GX actually uses.

Rear: Bilstein 5160 reservoir shocks

Out back we used the Bilstein 5160, a remote-reservoir shock. The extra oil capacity in the reservoir is what matters on a heavy rig: more oil means better heat management, so the shock resists fade on long, loaded, washboard roads instead of going soft when it gets hot. On a GX that hauls a tent and gear down forest roads, that fade resistance is exactly what keeps it composed.

The result

The GX rides the way a loaded overland rig should — controlled and planted instead of worn and floaty, level under the bumper, and composed whether it is on the highway or a rough road. New dampers matched to the weight it carries made an old, tired-riding truck feel dialed again.

Common questions on this build

How much lift does the Bilstein 6112 give a GX470?

It is adjustable — up to about 2.5 inches of front lift via the spring-collar settings. You set it where you want the nose to sit.

What is the difference between the 5160 and a standard shock?

The 5160 has a remote reservoir for more oil capacity, so it manages heat and resists fade under heavy loads — a real advantage on a loaded overland GX.

Will Bilsteins help a GX470 that carries a heavy bumper?

Yes. Worn shocks under added weight ride poorly and sit low. The 6112 up front and 5160 in the rear restore control and let the truck carry that weight properly.
