Lexus GX Skid Plates: GX470, GX460 and GX550 Compared.

We make skid plates. We do not make one for the GX yet. We build for Ford trucks, GM trucks, adventure vans and the 4th-gen Tacoma. There is nothing on this page for us to sell you.

Under the Lexus badge the GX is a body-on-frame Toyota. Real ladder chassis, real crossmembers, and in every generation it shares its platform with a Toyota that gets far more aftermarket attention. That sharing is the most useful thing to understand before you buy a plate, because it decides what parts exist for your truck.

GX work comes through our install bays — lifts, leveling kits and other manufacturers' armor. The fitment notes below come from the manufacturers' own listings, checked in July 2026.

Three generations, three Toyota siblings

Fitment does not cross between GX generations. It does cross to the Toyota sibling of the same generation, and manufacturers usually say so on the listing.

You can see it in the part numbers. RCI's transfer case skid is listed for the 2003–2009 4Runner V8 and the GX470 together. Their KDSS engine skid is listed for the 2010–2024 4Runner and GX460 together. Rival's fuel tank skid for the GX550 is the same part they sell for the 2024–2026 Land Cruiser, and their transmission and catalytic converter skid is listed for the GX550, the 2025–2026 4Runner, the 2024–2026 Tacoma and the 2021–2026 Tundra — all i-FORCE gas, not i-FORCE MAX hybrid.

So the practical rule is not "do not assume 4Runner parts fit." It is: read the fitment list, because the good ones name the siblings explicitly. Where a listing does not, ask which mounting points it uses.

This also corrects a common assumption about the newest truck. The GX550 is not waiting for the aftermarket to catch up. Because it shares GA-F with the Land Cruiser and the 6th-gen 4Runner, the tooling was already paid for by higher-volume vehicles, and a full three-plate range plus a genuine Lexus accessory range was available early.

KDSS

KDSS is Toyota's hydraulic anti-roll system. It runs plumbing and hardware through space a skid plate wants to occupy, and it has a different answer in each GX generation.

GX470. KDSS was available as an option from 2004, so some trucks have it and some do not — and the KDSS cars are the poorly served ones. Talons Garage state plainly that they do not have a compatible design for the KDSS GX470 at this time. C4 Fabrication's full skid set is listed as not compatible with KDSS. BudBuilt's front skid for the V8 4Runner and GX470 is listed as non-KDSS. RCI does sell a KDSS-specific engine skid for the 2003–2009 GX470. If you have a KDSS GX470, check that first and shop from what fits rather than from what you would prefer.

GX460. KDSS became standard on this generation, so a KDSS-compatible part is the baseline rather than a special order. The reason you still see KDSS in the product names is that the shared 4Runner listings cover a truck where KDSS was optional.

GX550. The equivalent is E-KDSS, on the Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades. Manufacturers split on it, so this is the question to ask. Rival's engine skid states it fits the GX550 including Overtrail. ICON's front skid plate kit excludes the Overtrail.

Look under your own truck before ordering. Hydraulic lines and a valve block near the frame behind the front wheels means you have it.

Lift and diff drop change what fits

This one catches people who armor a truck after lifting it, and it is worth raising because the GX is a commonly lifted vehicle.

Talons Garage list their GX470 and GX460 plates as designed for stock vehicles and not compatible with lift kits that require subframe modification, generally lifts greater than three inches. C4 Fabrication's GX470 set is listed as working with a one-inch differential drop. RCI build a differential drop cage into their GX460 engine skid specifically so a diff drop kit can be used without spacing the plate down.

If a lift is in the plan, decide the suspension before you buy plates, and tell the manufacturer what you are running.

What the factory gives you

We could not verify a full factory coverage list per generation and trim, so we are not going to publish one. Two things we can state.

The GX550 Overtrail has a factory engine guard. Rival note on their own product page that it does not allow oil maintenance without removing it, which is why their replacement has oil filter and drain ports. Lexus also sells accessory skid plates for the GX550 through dealers, including a middle skid plate, so the factory range and the accessory range are separate things.

For the older trucks, get underneath and count. Note what each plate sits below — oil pan, transmission, catalytic converters, transfer case, fuel tank — and how thick it feels at the edge.

What the market sells

Checked against live listings in July 2026. Specifications and fitment drift, so confirm on the product page before you buy.

Also serving the GX: BudBuilt, a long-standing Toyota-only armor specialist with a front skid for the non-KDSS V8 4Runner and GX470, and Victory 4x4, with a transmission and catalytic converter skid listed for the GX460, GX470 and V8 4Runner. BudBuilt's site returns errors to automated requests, so we have not verified their current specifications and are not going to state them.

Two things that table is useful for. 1/4″ aluminum is normal on this platform, in 5052 and in stamped alloy, so material alone will not separate a good kit from a poor one. And the word package means different things: Talons' GX460 package is engine, transmission and transfer case, while ICON's GX550 front kit reaches the front differential and steering rack but sells the transmission skid separately. Write down the components you want and tick them off.

Where the money goes

If you are buying in stages:

1. Engine and front. First contact, and the most expensive thing to hole.

2. Transfer case. It hangs low on a body-on-frame SUV and sits in the path of anything you straddle.

3. Fuel tank. Exposed middle, and breakover is the limiting geometry on a wheelbase this length.

4. Catalytic converters. Ride height is the risk factor — a thief gets underneath without a jack. Our cat shield explainer covers what actually stops the cut. On the GX470 and GX460 the converter protection is usually combined with the transmission plate rather than sold separately.

How to judge a GX kit

The general criteria are in our criteria guide. Four things are specific to this vehicle.

Confirm the generation, then the KDSS question for that generation. Those two answers eliminate most of the catalog before you compare anything else.

Tell them what suspension you are running. Several manufacturers restrict fitment above roughly three inches of lift, or design around a specific differential drop.

Ask about the oil filter and drain plug. If there is no opening for them, ask how long the plate takes to drop. On a vehicle this expensive to have on a lift, that cost repeats at every service.

Hold a thickness floor of 3/16″ in steel or 1/4″ in aluminum. Resistance to permanent bending scales with the square of thickness, so doubling thickness gives roughly four times the stiffness. That is why 1/4″ aluminum out-resists 3/16″ steel at roughly half the mass and does not rust where the coating chips. Steel's advantage is surface hardness against repeated abrasion. On a GX the weight argument carries extra force, because these are heavy vehicles and often carrying a roof load. The engineering is in our aluminum versus steel comparison. Talons publish both weights for the same GX470 engine skid: about 26 lb in 1/4″ aluminum, about 57 lb in 3/16″ steel.

Where we stand

Do you make Lexus GX skid plates?

Is the Lexus GX body-on-frame?
Yes, in every generation. The GX470 and GX460 use Toyota's F2 platform and the GX550 uses GA-F, all with a ladder chassis.

Do 4Runner skid plates fit a GX?
Often yes, within the same generation, and the good listings say so. RCI list one transfer case skid for the 2003–2009 4Runner V8 and GX470, and one KDSS engine skid for the 2010–2024 4Runner and GX460. Read the fitment list rather than guessing either way.

What does the GX550 share parts with?
The Land Cruiser Prado J250 and the 6th-gen 4Runner. Rival sell one fuel tank skid for the 2024–2026 Land Cruiser and the GX550, and one transmission and catalytic converter skid covering the GX550, 4Runner, Tacoma and Tundra in i-FORCE gas form.

Will a GX460 plate fit a GX550?
No. The GX550 moved to a different platform for 2024. Buy for your generation.

Does KDSS affect skid plate fitment?
Yes, and differently per generation. It was optional on the GX470, and several manufacturers have no KDSS design for that truck. It became standard on the GX460. On the GX550 the equivalent is E-KDSS on the Overtrail grades, and manufacturers differ on whether they cover it.

I have a KDSS GX470. What are my options?
Shorter than you would like. RCI list a KDSS-specific engine skid for the 2003–2009 GX470. Talons Garage state they do not have a compatible design, C4 Fabrication's set is not KDSS compatible, and BudBuilt's front skid is listed non-KDSS. Confirm current fitment with each manufacturer, because this changes.

Will a lift change what fits?
It can. Talons list their GX plates as designed for stock vehicles and not compatible with lifts requiring subframe modification, generally over three inches. C4's GX470 set works with a one-inch differential drop, and RCI build a differential drop cage into their GX460 engine skid. Decide the suspension first.

Steel or aluminum on a GX?
Both are widely available. Bend resistance scales with the square of thickness, so 1/4″ aluminum out-resists 3/16″ steel at roughly half the mass and does not rust. Talons publish about 26 lb for their aluminum GX470 engine skid against about 57 lb for the steel version. On a heavy SUV that often carries a roof load, the weight argument is the strong one.

Why is there less product for the GX than the 4Runner?
Volume. Manufacturers tool for the 4Runner and the GX benefits from the overlap. It is an underserved platform rather than an unsuitable one, and on the GX550 the overlap with the Land Cruiser and 4Runner has largely closed the gap.
