Ford Ranger Catalytic Converter Shield: Theft Protection That Bolts On.

The 2024 Ranger is a new truck on a new platform, and the aftermarket is still catching up. What a converter shield covers on a Ranger and Ranger Raptor, and why new platforms are awkward.

The short version

The 2024 Ranger is a new truck on a new platform, which flips the usual maths: the likelihood of theft is lower than on an established full-size truck, but the consequence is worse, because replacement parts and shop familiarity have not caught up yet. One plate covers the standard Ranger and the Ranger Raptor and protects the transmission and converter together. Ground clearance matters more on a mid-size truck than a full-size one, which is the argument against universal clamp-on plates here.

A Ford Ranger catalytic converter shield is a 1/4" aluminum plate that bolts under the truck and covers the converter plus the exhaust pipe on both sides, so a thief can't reach the cuts they need to make to steal the part. The shield on this page is built for the 2024+ next-gen Ranger and Ranger Raptor — the trucks that hang a plastic transmission pan and exposed converters right in the open.

Start here: this is the next-gen Ranger plate

The Ranger came back to the US market as a midsize adventure truck, and it has run in two distinct shapes. They don't share an underbody, so which one you're under decides everything.

2024+ next-gen Ranger and Ranger Raptor — the redesigned truck on the new platform. The body, frame, and exhaust routing all changed, and the converters and plastic transmission pan sit low and exposed. This is the truck the shield on this page is built for.

2019–2023 Ranger — the earlier P375 truck, with a different frame and exhaust layout. We don't make a cat shield for that generation yet, so if that's your truck, this isn't your plate — a shield cut for the next-gen Ranger won't line up on it.

The two generations look similar from the driver's seat but are different vehicles underneath, so verify your year against the product fitment before ordering — a cat shield only works if it covers the pipe where your truck's cuts would be made.

The shield on this page fits the 2024+ next-gen Ranger and the Ranger Raptor. It's the combined plate that covers the transmission area and the catalytic converter in one part, so it sits over the mid-body run of the exhaust where the converter lives on the next-gen truck.

You can see the fitment and the current part on the Ford Ranger transmission and catalytic converter skid plate page.

Why the Ranger is worth a thief's time

Two things decide whether a converter gets stolen: how easy it is to reach, and what the metal inside is worth. The Ranger scores badly on the first. It's a midsize truck built to clear trail obstacles, so it rides higher than a car — a thief slides under without a jack. The same ground clearance that helps you off-road hands them a clean shot at the exhaust.

The converter holds small amounts of precious metals, which is the whole reason a stolen one has scrap value. Nobody unbolts it. They cut the exhaust pipe on both sides of the converter and pull the section out. On a truck they can walk under, that's a job of a couple of minutes with a battery saw, and you're left with a hole in the exhaust and a repair bill in four figures.

If rocks and trail damage are also on your mind, that's a separate part — full underbody coverage lives in the Ford Ranger skid plate guide. This page is theft only.

Covering the cuts, not just the converter

A cat shield stops theft by blocking the cuts. The converter comes out only if a blade can reach the pipe at both ends — so a shield has to sit over the converter body and the pipe on both sides. Cover the middle and leave a pipe end exposed, and you've bought nothing: the thief just cuts where the shield isn't.

Our Ford Ranger cat shield is built to close both of those cuts. It's a plate bolted to the underbody, sitting between the thief and the converter, covering the pipe on each side. With the plate in the way, they can't make a cut without pulling the shield first — and that takes tools, time, and noise. Most walk to the next truck instead.

On the Ranger, this same plate also covers the transmission area, so you get theft protection and a measure of underbody coverage from one part rather than two.

How the plate is built

Plenty of what's sold as a cat shield is thin sheet metal or a mesh cage — light enough to cut through or bend away with the same saw that takes the converter. If the shield gives up as fast as the pipe does, it never mattered.

Ours is 1/4" 5052-H32 aluminum, and that thickness is the entire point. A hand saw doesn't get through it quickly, and you don't bend it out of the way by hand. Aluminum also doesn't rust, which counts on a part that lives in road salt and spray year-round. We cut, fold, MIG weld, and powder coat every plate in-house in Colorado. For the longer case on why we build in aluminum rather than steel, see aluminum vs steel skid plates.

The table below is the comparison that actually decides a Ranger buy — a plate cut for your generation against the universal shield that gets marketed as "fits Ranger."

What decides it Juggernaut Ranger cat shield Universal "fits Ranger" shield
Generation fit Drawn for the next-gen Ranger's underbody and exhaust routing One shape for every truck
Both pipe cuts covered Covers the converter plus the pipe on both sides Often covers the converter body only
Resistance to a saw 1/4" plate — slow to cut, won't bend by hand Cuts about as fast as the pipe
How it mounts Bolts to the underbody, stays tight and quiet Clamps, straps, or zip-style
Life in road salt Aluminum, won't rust; powder coated Steel or mesh, rusts
Extra coverage Also shields the Ranger transmission area Converter zone only

A universal shield is a compromise by design: made to sort-of fit a lot of trucks, which means it fits none of them well. On the Ranger underbody that shows up as gaps, straps that rattle, and a pipe end left in the open — the exact spot a thief cuts. If they can reach the cut, the shield failed, no matter how it's marketed.

Because it's drawn for the next-gen Ranger, it lines up with the truck's existing mounting points and goes on with hand tools — no drilling, no cutting, no fabrication. Owners running it tell us it dropped right into place and they got it on in the driveway themselves.

Fit, mounting, and heat clearance

This is a bolt-on part. It mounts to the underbody at set points, over the converter and pipe run. Basic hand tools and a way to get under the truck are all it takes.

The one thing to get right is heat clearance. A converter runs hot, so the plate is designed to hold the correct gap around it. Follow the fitment and don't force it tighter than the design allows — that clearance is doing a job.

We install these in our own shop in Wheat Ridge every week. For a walk-through of a professional cat shield install, see cat shield installation: what's involved. For the bigger picture on stopping converter theft, see catalytic converter theft protection and the what is a cat shield hub.

FAQ

Does this fit the older 2019–2023 Ranger?

No. This plate is cut for the 2024+ next-gen Ranger and Ranger Raptor. The 2019–2023 P375 Ranger is a different platform with different exhaust routing, and we don't make a cat shield for it yet — so it won't line up. If that's your truck, text your year and trim to (970) 341-4221 and we'll tell you where things stand.

Will this fit the Ranger Raptor?

Yes. This shield covers the next-gen Ranger Raptor as well as the standard 2024+ Ranger — owners running it on the Raptor report it fits perfectly. As always, confirm against the listed fitment for your exact year before you buy.

My next-gen Ranger has the 2.3 EcoBoost — does the shield work with that exhaust?

Yes. The 2024+ Ranger's base engine is the 2.3L EcoBoost, and this plate is cut to fit it — as well as the Raptor's 3.0L V6. It's drawn around where the converter and transmission pan actually sit on the next-gen underbody, whatever engine is in front of them.

Does the shield cover the pipe or just the converter?

Both, and that's the part that matters. The converter is stolen by cutting the pipe on each side of it, so a shield over the converter body alone still leaves the cuts exposed. Ours covers the converter and the pipe on both sides.

I've got an aftermarket cat-back or exhaust — will the shield still fit?

It depends on what changed. The shield is drawn around the factory converter and pipe location; a modified exhaust can move or resize what sits in that zone. If you've changed the exhaust, check the shield's coverage against your setup, or ask us before ordering so it still closes both cuts.

Why 1/4" aluminum instead of a cheaper steel or mesh shield?

Thickness is what resists a saw. A thin shield or a mesh cage cuts about as fast as the pipe it's protecting. At 1/4", the plate is slow to cut and won't bend out of the way by hand — and aluminum won't rust under the truck. More on that trade-off in aluminum vs steel skid plates.

Is this the same as a full skid plate?

It is a skid plate — the transmission one — that also shields the catalytic converter, so it does impact protection and theft deterrence in a single part. It's just not the whole kit. For full underbody coverage against rocks and trail damage, step up to the Ranger Full Skid Plate Package, or read the Ford Ranger skid plate guide first.
