The short version

The Ram ProMaster's FWD layout leaves the oil pan, transmission, and fuel tank exposed. This guide covers what to protect, how to install it, and why Juggernaut's ProMaster skid plates are the only vehicle-specific option on the market.

The Ram ProMaster is front-wheel drive — which places the engine, transmission, and catalytic converters low and forward, the van's most exposed components. This guide covers what the FWD layout leaves exposed, what a skid plate covers, and how to spec 1/4″ aluminum underbody armor for a 2014–2026 ProMaster. We manufacture these plates in Colorado and install them.

What the ProMaster's front-wheel-drive layout exposes

The Ram ProMaster is built on a front-wheel-drive platform (shared with the Fiat Ducato), so the drivetrain sits at the front of the van, low and ahead of the front axle. That places these components directly in the path of road debris and anything the front tires throw:

  • Engine oil pan — low and forward; vulnerable to rocks on gravel or rough pavement.
  • Transmission — integrated at the front of the engine, in the same exposure zone.
  • Catalytic converters — the ProMaster has two, both sitting underneath the front of the van.

Most commercial vans are rear- or all-wheel drive and don't concentrate this hardware at the front. The ProMaster does, which is why its underbody exposure is different from other vans.

What a ProMaster skid plate covers

The Juggernaut ProMaster front skid plate covers the engine, transmission, and both catalytic converters in a single 1/4″ aluminum plate. It bolts to existing frame points — no drilling or fabrication — and includes oil-drain access so routine service doesn't require removing it.

The front plate is also designed to clear a second under-hood generator or alternator — a common addition on conversion builds for charging house batteries — so you don't have to choose between added power and underbody protection.

For RV and camper builds (Winnebago Solis, Travato, Thor Sequence), there are also dedicated skid plates for the onboard generator and lithium battery pack, which sit underbody on those conversions.

In-stock plates ship the next business day from our Colorado shop.

Do you need a ProMaster skid plate?

It depends on how the van is used:

  • Fleet and commercial use: A single cracked oil pan or transmission strike is an engine- or transmission-out repair plus downtime — more than the cost of protection across the fleet.
  • Conversion and camper builds: A built-out van carries far more value than its purchase price, and these vans regularly see gravel roads and rough access routes.
  • Catalytic converters: The front skid covers both converters. On the ProMaster the cats sit vertically beside the oil pan, which already makes them a harder theft target than most vehicles — but the coverage is there either way.

A stock ProMaster has no meaningful underbody protection, so any of the above is a reason to add it.

Aluminum vs steel on a van — why it matters more here

On a cargo or camper van, weight is payload. Every pound of heavy steel skid plate is a pound off what the van can legally carry. A 1/4″ 5052-H32 aluminum plate provides impact protection at roughly 40–50% less weight than equivalent steel, and the marine-grade alloy doesn't rust — relevant for a van that sees road salt and sits outdoors. For a vehicle where payload and corrosion both matter, aluminum is the practical choice.

Will a skid plate reduce ground clearance or block oil changes?

No on both. The plate is engineered to sit flush within the existing underbody geometry, so it doesn't hang lower than the components it covers — stock ground clearance is maintained. It also includes an oil-drain access cutout, so a standard oil change can be done with the plate in place.

ProMaster skid plate by configuration

Configuration Recommended coverage
ProMaster 1500 / 2500 / 3500 (any wheelbase) Front skid plate (engine + transmission + cats)
Urban / fleet vans Front skid plate — covers the front drivetrain and converters
RV / camper builds (Winnebago, Thor) Front skid plate + generator and battery skids as equipped

The front skid is the foundation for every ProMaster; RV-specific skids are added based on what's mounted underneath the build.

ProMaster skid plate options compared

The ProMaster aftermarket is small but real — a few makers cover the front underbody:

Maker Material Coverage Notes
Juggernaut USA 1/4″ 5052 aluminum Engine, transmission & both catalytic converters (one plate) Clears a second under-hood generator/alternator; bolts to existing frame points; oil-drain access; made and installed in Colorado; we've manufactured ProMaster skid plates for years; lifetime warranty; in-stock plates ship next business day
Van Compass 1/4″ aluminum Engine, transmission & catalytic converters A newer entrant to the ProMaster market — same alloy and thickness as ours, vehicle-specific, sold direct and through resellers (Owl Vans, PAD Overland). Two practical differences: it isn't compatible with a second under-hood alternator/generator, and it mounts to the steering-rack bolts, which can be very tight and difficult to remove if you ever need to drop the plate; no local install
E-Guard (EDGE VanWorks) 1/8″ steel Engine, transmission & under-hood generator A thin (1/8″) steel option — thinner than our 1/4″ plate, heavier per area, and prone to rust where the coating chips

How to choose: Van Compass and Juggernaut both run 1/4″ aluminum and cover the engine, transmission, and both catalytic converters — the differences are compatibility, mounting, and service. We've manufactured ProMaster skid plates for years; Van Compass is a more recent entrant. Ours clears a second under-hood generator or alternator (Van Compass doesn't), bolts to existing frame points rather than the steering-rack bolts (easier to drop for service), ships in-stock the next business day, carries a lifetime warranty, and can be installed at our Denver shop. E-Guard is the pick if you specifically want steel — though at 1/8″ it's thinner than our 1/4″ plate and carries steel's weight and rust trade-offs.

Competitor specs are point-in-time (mid-2026) and change — confirm at the source before you buy.

How it installs

The ProMaster plate bolts to existing frame points and goes in from below. A first-time install typically takes 1–2 hours with a floor jack, jack stands, and basic hand tools. Use the reinforced frame rails near the front subframe as lift points — not the engine cradle. See the ProMaster front skid plate install instructions for step-by-step.

Prefer to have it done? We install ProMaster armor at our Wheat Ridge / Denver shop, including scheduled fleet installs. Call or text (970) 341-4221.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ProMaster skid plate made of?
1/4″ 5052-H32 marine-grade aluminum, powder-coated, manufactured in Colorado, with a lifetime warranty.

Does it fit all ProMaster years?
It's designed for 2014–2026 Ram ProMaster (1500/2500/3500). Confirm your exact year and configuration before ordering.

Does it work with a second alternator or under-hood generator?
Yes — the front plate is designed to clear a second under-hood generator or alternator, a common conversion-build addition for charging house batteries. (The Van Compass plate isn't compatible with that setup.)

Do I have to remove it for oil changes?
No — the plate has an oil-drain access cutout, so routine service is done with it in place.

How does it compare to the Van Compass skid plate?
Both use 1/4″ aluminum and cover the engine, transmission, and both catalytic converters. The differences: ours clears a second under-hood generator or alternator (Van Compass isn't compatible with that), and it bolts to existing frame points rather than the steering-rack bolts (which can be tight to remove for service). Ours also ships in-stock the next business day, includes a lifetime warranty, and can be installed at our Denver shop.

How fast does it ship?
In-stock plates ship the next business day from our Colorado shop.

Protect your ProMaster

Shop the front skid plate — it covers the engine, transmission, and both catalytic converters in one 1/4″ aluminum plate, bolt-on with oil-drain access and a lifetime warranty. See everything in the Ram ProMaster skid plate collection.

Or have us install it in Denvercall or text (970) 341-4221. Running a fleet? Ask about volume pricing and a scheduled fleet install day.

The ProMaster is front-wheel drive. That puts the engine, transmission, and both catalytic converters low and forward — the van's most exposed components. One 1/4″ aluminum front skid covers them all.
