The Mercedes Sprinter rides high and runs far — and its underbody exposes the oil pan, transmission, transfer case, and catalytic converter to everything the road throws up. Sprinters are also among the most-targeted vans for catalytic converter theft. This guide covers what's exposed, the all-important 4x4-vs-AWD fitment split, and how to spec 1/4″ aluminum underbody armor for a 2019–2026 Sprinter. We manufacture these plates in Colorado and install them.

Sprinter 4x4 vs AWD — get the right plate

The single most important thing when buying Sprinter armor: the 2019–2022 “4x4” and the 2023+ “AWD” are different drivetrains, and the skid plates are not interchangeable.

  • 2019–2022 Sprinter 4x4 — the selectable 4x4 system with low-range.
  • 2023–2026 Sprinter AWD — Mercedes' newer permanent all-wheel-drive setup (4-cylinder diesel, 9-speed automatic), with different underbody packaging.

Our skid plates are split to match: a dedicated 2019–2022 4x4 lineup and a dedicated 2023–2026 AWD lineup. The catalytic converter guard fits broadly across 2010–2026. Always confirm your exact year and drivetrain before ordering — a 4x4 plate won't fit an AWD van, and vice versa.

What the Sprinter's underbody exposes

On a 4x4 or AWD Sprinter, the components hanging low and in harm's way:

  • Engine oil pan — low and forward; a rock strike here is an engine-out repair.
  • Transmission — exposed across the mid-belly.
  • Transfer case — the 4x4/AWD hardware hangs low and is expensive to replace.
  • Catalytic converter — exposed to both trail strikes and theft.
  • Rear shock mounts — exposed on the 4x4 rear suspension.

Sprinters and catalytic converter theft

The Sprinter is one of the most-targeted vehicles for catalytic converter theft — it sits high enough to slide under, and the converter is accessible. An unprotected cat can be cut out in minutes, and replacement plus downtime runs into the thousands, especially on a work or camper van you depend on.

A catalytic converter guard bolts over the converter and raises the time and effort a theft attempt takes — usually enough to send a thief to an easier target. Our Sprinter cat guard fits 2010–2026 and can be run on its own or alongside the engine and transmission skids.

Do you need Sprinter skid plates?

  • Overland and adventure builds: If you take a 4x4 or AWD Sprinter off pavement, the transfer case and oil pan are the first things to find a rock.
  • Any Sprinter parked in a city: The cat guard is worth it on theft risk alone.
  • Camper conversions: A built-out Sprinter is worth far more than its purchase price — underbody protection is cheap insurance.

Why 1/4″ aluminum on a Sprinter

On a van, weight is payload, and a Sprinter is often loaded heavy. A 1/4″ 5052-H32 aluminum plate protects at roughly 40–50% less weight than equivalent steel, and the marine-grade alloy won't rust against road salt. That's why every serious Sprinter skid plate — ours and the major competitors — is aluminum, not steel.

Sprinter skid plate options compared

The Sprinter has a real aftermarket — a few makers cover the 4x4 and AWD underbody, all in aluminum:

Maker Material Made in Notes
Juggernaut USA 1/4″ 5052-H32 aluminum USA (Colorado) Full 4x4 and AWD lineup — engine, transmission, transfer case, rear shock, plus a 2010–2026 cat guard; marine-grade 5052; made and installed in Colorado; lifetime warranty; in-stock plates ship next business day
Van Compass 1/4″ aluminum (5052 / 6061-T6) + steel brackets Imported The most established Sprinter range, 4x4 and AWD, sold direct and through resellers (Owl Vans, PAD Overland). Imported; no local install
ASFIR 4x4 1/4″ aluminum Israel Premium, laser-cut with stiffening ribs; sold piece by piece at a premium; imported, no local install

How to choose: The major Sprinter options are all 1/4″ aluminum, so the differences are coverage, alloy, and service. Ours runs marine-grade 5052-H32 across the lineup, covers the 4x4 and AWD underbody plus a wide-fitment cat guard, is made and installed in Colorado, ships in-stock the next business day, and carries a lifetime warranty. Van Compass and ASFIR are strong imported options if you prefer them or want a specific piece they offer.

Competitor materials and fitment are point-in-time (mid-2026) and change — confirm at the source before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Do 4x4 and AWD Sprinter skid plates interchange?
No. The 2019–2022 4x4 and the 2023+ AWD are different drivetrains with different underbody packaging — confirm your exact year and drivetrain and order the matching plate.

What are the plates made of?
1/4″ 5052-H32 marine-grade aluminum, powder-coated, made in Colorado, lifetime warranty.

Will a skid plate stop catalytic converter theft?
It dramatically increases the time and effort required, which is usually enough to deter a thief. Our cat guard fits 2010–2026 Sprinters.

Do these fit the 2007–2018 (NCV3) Sprinter?
The catalytic converter guard covers 2010–2026. For engine, transmission, and transfer-case skids, our current lineup covers the 2019–2022 4x4 and 2023–2026 AWD — send us your exact year and drivetrain and we'll confirm fitment.

How fast do they ship?
In-stock plates ship the next business day from our Colorado shop.
