Lift a 4Runner the right way
A 4Runner lift is a front-end job first. The 4Runner runs a coilover independent front suspension, and once you go past a mild level the factory upper control arm runs out of caster adjustment and the CV and ball-joint angles get steep. Past about 2.5–3 inches up front we add an aftermarket upper control arm (SPC, Total Chaos, Camburg, Dirt King, or Icon), and on taller setups a differential-drop kit to bring the front CV and diff angles back toward stock so the axles and boots last.
Out back is where the 4Runner is different from a Tacoma: it runs coil springs on a solid rear axle, not leaf packs. That's a great ride empty, but the coils compress under a rear bumper, drawers, a full-size spare, or a loaded trip — so we match rear coil rate (or a touch of rear lift) to how the truck is actually built. We work across every generation: 3rd (1996–2002), 4th (2003–2009, the GX470 platform), 5th (2010–2024, the bulk of what we lift), and the new 6th gen (2025+) on Toyota's TNGA-F platform.
Every 4Runner lift includes
- Post-lift alignment to factory spec
- Front coilover or spring preload set correctly — no bind
- Upper control arm clearance and CV angle checked
- Differential drop fitted when the lift height calls for it
- KDSS or X-REAS accounted for on equipped trims
- Rear coil rate matched to your bumper, drawers, and gear
- Panhard / track-bar geometry checked on taller lifts
- Torque check and road test before pickup
Coilovers up front, coils out back — and where 4Runners bind
The front of a 4Runner behaves like a Tacoma: a coilover IFS that only tolerates so much height before the geometry fights back. A 2 to 2.5-inch level (Bilstein 6112, Eibach Pro-Truck, or a set of longer coilovers) clears a 33 and keeps the factory arms happy. Go taller and the stock upper control arm runs out of caster and the CV angle steepens, so we add an aftermarket UCA and, on taller builds, a differential drop to protect the front CVs and boots.
The rear is the part people get wrong. The 4Runner is coil-sprung on a solid rear axle — not leaf like a Tacoma or Ranger — so rear height and load capacity come from the coil, not an add-a-leaf. A rig carrying a steel bumper, a spare, and a drawer system needs a higher-rate or taller rear coil to sit level and stop bottoming, and on bigger lifts we check the panhard/track-bar so the axle stays centered. If your 4Runner has KDSS (TRD Off-Road / Pro) or X-REAS on an older trim, we account for how it settles when we spec and fit the kit.
